CLIMATE RESEARCH INITIATIVE
Climate change is an area of focus for Wellington Management, formalized by our multi-year research partnerships with Woodwell Climate Research Center and the MIT Center for Sustainability Science and Strategy (CS3). Wellington Management’s Climate Research Team considers climate risk across several dimensions, including focus on physical climate risk, transition risks of policy and technology, and biodiversity. This effort spans investors across asset classes including equity, corporate fixed income, commodities, real estate, and municipal and sovereign bond markets.
Climate change is a defining issue of our time with future impacts that span the globe. Yet capital markets have largely underrepresented this issue. Our north star is the belief that material ESG issues, including climate change, can affect the long-term value of the assets in which we invest. Therefore, it is in our clients’ best interest for us to analyze them as part of our investment mosaic, for the benefit of our clients in preparation for a world that will become increasingly aware of climate change’s effects on economic and social systems. The objective of the Climate Research Team is to bridge the gap between climate science and finance to better understand the potential impact of climate variables on capital markets, identify potential asset mis-pricings, and produce financially relevant insights.
This role will be focused on supporting this initiative and will involve working closely with the Climate Research Team and members of the Client Platform.
THE POSITION
The Climate Research Co-op will gain exposure to the following activities:
Support our investors on climate integration with a lens of both physical climate change and energy transition-based risks and opportunities
Conduct research in areas of physical climate risks through company physical risk exposure reviews.
Carry out self-directed research projects which may include thematic research on the impacts of climate change on different parts of the financial market, gathering relevant data in advance of specific engagements with companies, and supporting the development of analytical frameworks to understand climate change impacts.
Attend and summarize company-wide climate research hubs with the Woodwell Climate Research Center and MIT Center for Sustainability Science and Strategy (CS3), and other climate-related meetings including company engagements, sell-side presentations, and industry groups.
