A Brief Overview

The Water Systems Technician is responsible for the operation, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of USP purified water systems, wastewater systems, and related utility equipment across the facility. This role ensures water systems remain in a state of control, supporting manufacturing operations while maintaining compliance with quality, regulatory, and safety requirements. The Water Systems Technician performs preventive and corrective maintenance, conducts system sanitizations, collects samples, supports audits and inspections, and assists in maintaining facility utility systems to ensure reliable and efficient operation.

What you will do

• Perform daily monitoring and inspections of USP purified water systems, storage tanks, distribution loops, wastewater systems, and associated equipment.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot resin bed, reverse osmosis (RO), deionization (DI), UV, filtration, and water distribution systems.
• Conduct routine sanitization, sterilization, flushing, and cleaning of water system equipment in accordance with approved procedures.
• Load and maintain water resin beds or other treatment materials as required.
• Monitor system performance, identify abnormalities, and respond to alarms or operational issues.
• Support water system startup, shutdown, and recovery activities.
• Collect water and wastewater samples according to established sampling plans and procedures.
• Coordinate with Quality and laboratory personnel to ensure timely testing and review of analytical results.
• Maintain water system logs, sampling records, maintenance documentation, and operational reports.
• Support investigations, corrective actions, and preventive actions related to water system deviations and excursions.
• Assist with internal audits, customer audits, and regulatory inspections involving utility and water systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance activities as defined in maintenance schedules, SOPs, and work orders.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and instrumentation issues associated with water and utility systems.
• Complete corrective maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime and maintain system reliability.
• Utilize CMMS systems to document maintenance activities and complete work orders.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system performance and reliability.

• Assist with maintenance of facility utility systems including plumbing, compressed air, HVAC, pumps, piping, and related infrastructure.
• Support installation, modification, and repair of utility equipment and components.
• Assist maintenance teams during equipment shutdowns, projects, and emergency repairs.

• Follow all company safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, electrical safety, and PPE requirements.
• Ensure compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), quality procedures, and company policies.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and inspection-ready work environment.
• Participate in root cause investigations and continuous improvement activities.

• Perform other duties as assigned to support plant operations and quality compliance.

• Some responsibilities may vary slightly by location.

 

 

Education Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED (Required)
• Technical school, vocational certification, or Associate Degree in Industrial Maintenance, Utilities, Mechanical Technology, or related field (Preferred)

 

 

Experience Qualifications

• 2-5 years of experience operating or maintaining industrial water systems, utility systems, or manufacturing equipment (Preferred)
• Experience in cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food, beverage, or regulated manufacturing environments (Preferred)

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of USP purified water systems, wastewater systems, and industrial utility operations (High proficiency)
• Mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills (High proficiency)
• Preventive maintenance and equipment reliability practices (High proficiency)
• Understanding of plumbing, pumps, valves, piping systems, and water treatment equipment (High proficiency)
• Ability to follow SOPs, work instructions, and quality procedures (High proficiency)
• Experience using CMMS systems and maintenance documentation (Medium proficiency)
• Sampling and data collection techniques (Medium proficiency)
• Understanding of cGMP requirements and regulated manufacturing environments (Medium proficiency)
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills (High proficiency)
• Effective verbal and written communication skills (Medium proficiency)

 

Work Environment

• Manufacturing and utility areas with exposure to water systems, wastewater systems, cleaning chemicals, and moving equipment.
• May require work in mechanical rooms, utility spaces, elevated areas, and confined spaces.
• Exposure to varying temperatures, humidity levels, and outdoor conditions.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.

 

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.
• Ability to work around mechanical equipment and utility systems safely.
• Ability to respond to off-shift emergencies and work overtime as needed.
