YOUR TASKS

 

  • You devote at least 70% of your assignment to scientific research within your linguistic area of specialization, report on this research regularly at scientific meetings, and publish your results and findings in recognized international journals and/or books with academic publishers.
  • You are actively involved in the research activities of one or more research groups within the department and establish collaborations with one or more researchers affiliated with the department.
  • Once a year, you offer a practical workshop in which you share your methodological expertise with interested senior and junior researchers in the department.
  • During the three-year mandate, you submit an ERC Starting Grant application with Ghent University as the host institution.
  • You are willing to make a limited contribution to the academic teaching provided by the Department of Linguistics and/or to the department’s outreach activities.

 

 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

 

  • You hold a doctoral degree based on a dissertation in the field of linguistics, or an equivalently recognized degree (the degree requirements must be met by the date of appointment). For degrees obtained outside the European Union, an equivalence certificate from NARIC must be provided.
  • You have at least one year of postdoctoral seniority at the time of appointment.
  • You are eligible to apply for an ERC Starting Grant in the 2027, 2028 and/or 2029 calls.
  • You have an excellent research profile, as evidenced by a strong international publication record, invited lectures, academic distinctions, acquisition of research funding, and so on.
  • You specialize in any subfield of linguistics/linguistic subdiscipline (fundamental research), provided that there are good opportunities for collaboration with one or more of the department’s existing research groups.
  • Your research is characterized by a high degree of methodological innovation. A broad applicability of the innovative tools and methods you use, also beyond your own subdiscipline, is considered an asset.
  • You have a specialization in one or more languages that are part of the curriculum of the Language and Literature programme at Ghent University.
  • You agree to abide by Ghent University’s code of ethics

 

 

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

 

  • We offer you a temporary appointment for three years withh a bench fee of EUR 1,500 per year to support your research activities.
  • Even if you have already been appointed earlier (whether or not at another university and whether or not in the same field of discipline) in a first term of up to 3 years, you can apply. The second appointment does not have to be immeditately connected to a first term.
  • Your contract will start on 1/01/2027 at the earliest.

  • In the field ‘Diploma’: a transcript of the required degree (if already in your possession). If you have a foreign diploma in a language other than our national languages (Dutch, French or German) or English, please add a translation in one of the mentioned languages.

  • a concise research plan (maximum 1,600-2,000 words in total) for the three-year appointment period, in which you explain, among other things:
  1. the content of your research line and your plans for the three years with regard to grant applications and publications (in a separate paragraph of at least 400 words);
  2. the innovative nature of the methodology you have in mind (in a separate paragraph of at least 400 words);
  3. the thematic focus of the ERC Starting Grant application that you will prepare as part of your assignment, as well as the timing of that application (in a separate paragraph of at least 400 words);
  • the way in which your research plan aligns with the activities of one or more of the department’s four major research groups (DiaLing, GLIMS, MULTIPLES/Linguistics, future research group GLLAS), explicitly mentioning the collaborations you wish to develop (also in a separate paragraph of at least 400 words)
