Position Summary
Non physician student professional nurse. The Nurse Extern renders individualized, age specific, and indirect bedside nursing care based on the nursing process and under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
Responsibilities
- Observes, reports and responds to the patients’ physical, psychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety/risk and discharge planning needs on admission and on an ongoing basis.
- Performs direct patient care activities according to the plan of care and as directed by RN.
- Recognizes early and subtle changes in patient condition and reports status to RN.
- Transitions care of patient by reporting patient status, individual patient needs, plan of care, current treatments and unfinished orders.
- Documents patient vital signs, I&O, height/weight and ADLs.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work environment. Shares responsibility for organizing supplies, tracking, stocking and storing equipment and keeping the department clean and organized.

Qualifications
- Special Skills:
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Basic computer skills
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact positively and effectively with patients, visitors and physicians.
- Minimum Requirements:
- Education: Currently enrolled in a school of nursing at the senior level.
- Experience: Successful completion of three semesters of nursing school (entering last semester/block). Required to submit at least two letters of recommendation and skills checklist documentation from nursing instructor. Only those skills accomplished may be performed. Preceding skills to be monitored and evaluated by a RN when performed for the first time.
- Certification/Licensure: CPR
