Design / Project Engineer is responsible for providing engineering and technical expertise for new and existing product and process development and improvement / troubleshooting. Design / Project Engineer works as a liaison operating at the intersection of the engineering, sales, quality and operations departments. Incumbent use customer input and sales information to design or re-design, develop and / or test process, tooling and method designs. This position will also conduct simulations of metal flow to improve the tooling and method designs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage projects, NPI and other product launches through utilization of the DIAMOND stage gate process
Develop, recommend and implement new product design and product improvement efforts managing product development process through various stages including prototype development and certification, material / labor costing, and production methodology.
Support SMART program by defining and facilitating continuous improvement activities; apply Lean, Six Sigma and sound RCA tools.
With support of the Director of Engineering, coordinate closely with other departments including Sales, Supply Chain, Quality and Operations as well as outside suppliers, designers and technicians throughout all stages of product design and improvement processes.
Design and simulate tooling and process to produce a finished forged part that meets customer specifications
Utilize design software and tools to provide valid information to technically support sales
Designs forged part from customers machine drawing, forging part drawing, or 3-D model. Revises drawings and models due to customer changes or internal needs.
Designs the preform shapes and operations required to produce the finish forged part
Setup and run FEM simulations to validate that the tooling design will produce an acceptable finish forging
Interfaces with shop floor associates to discuss and resolve design and manufacturing issues
Other duties as assigned
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
BS in Mechanical Engineering, or similar discipline with 3+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment, forging experience preferred. College graduates with relevant experience will also be considered along with Fundamentals solid mechanics, and Fundamentals of Materials Science or Metallurgy
Proven ability to manage projects and multiple concurrent priorities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Must possess solid analytical skills in defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions
Introductory experience with 3D CAD package, prefer CATIA V5 or Creo (Pro-Engineer)
1000+ hours Machine time preferred
Familiarity with finite element modeling principles
Experience with stress/strain, deformations, and thermal distributions
Must understand all pre-processing concepts such as boundary conditions and meshing
Must understand all processing concepts and have
Must understand post processing and be able to interpret the outcomes of a FE model.
Metal flow simulation software a plus (DEFORM 2D/3D)
Knowledge of drawing and dimensioning standards (ASME Y14.5-1994 and later)
Experience with detailing and understanding tooling layouts and assemblies
Comfortable with heat transfer, including finite differences, and deriving boundary conditions
