Position Summary 

The Bike Technician at the Environmental Center oversees the operations of the Bike Collective on campus, providing support to students, faculty, and staff with bike maintenance, repairs, and long-term rentals. This role is integral to maintaining the campus bike fleet, promoting sustainable transportation, and organizing educational events that encourage cycling as an alternative mode of transit. The Bike Technician will work independently to diagnose and repair bikes, assist with bike rentals, and ensure that the Bike Collective space is organized and welcoming for all patrons. 

Primary Responsibilities & Tasks: 

• Bike Maintenance: Perform repairs and routine maintenance on the campus rental bike fleet to ensure bikes are safe and functional. 

• Appointment Coordination: Schedule and manage appointments with community members for bike repairs and tune-ups. 

• Shop Organization: Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient bike shop environment. 

• Program Promotion: Promote Bike Collective programs, services, and events across the campus community. 

• Rental Management: Track and manage both short- and long-term bicycle rentals. 

• Sales Tracking: Record and track payments for rentals, tubes, and other bike-related parts or supplies. 

• Event Planning: Organize and lead educational events aimed at increasing cycling awareness, safety, and skills. 

• Customer Support: Assist patrons in diagnosing bike issues and guide them through the repair process in a supportive, educational manner. 

• Community Engagement: Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that supports sustainable transportation and bike culture on campus. 

• Independent Work: Operate with minimal supervision while managing multiple tasks and responsibilities effectively. 

Learning Outcomes: 

Students in this role will: 

• Develop strong technical and hands-on skills related to bicycle repair and maintenance. 

• Gain experience in customer service, particularly in diagnosing and solving technical issues for a wide range of patrons. 

• Build organizational skills by managing bike rentals, appointments, and sales tracking. 

• Learn to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences. 

• Gain experience in event planning and program promotion, contributing to a campus-wide culture of sustainability. 

• Enhance problem-solving and time-management skills while working independently in a dynamic environment.
