About this role

Nonprofit Fundraiser - Advocacy & Social Impact | $20-$20.50/hr + Bonuses
Paid training | Full-time preferred - Part-time available | Monday-Friday | Bonus opportunities | Career growth
Turn your interest in social impact into real nonprofit experience.
Public Outreach is growing our Boston fundraising team and looking for outgoing, motivated people who want meaningful work, reliable pay, and experience they can build into a career.
Depending on the campaign, our fundraisers may represent organizations such as Oxfam, Save the Children, ACLU, the Obama Foundation, and other leading nonprofit partners.
You'll work face-to-face with members of the public, turning conversations about important issues into sustainable monthly support for the nonprofit you're representing.
No fundraising experience is required.
We'll teach you fundraising. We're looking for people who bring energy, curiosity, resilience, strong communication skills, and the willingness to learn.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
This is active, face-to-face fundraising.
You'll work in neighborhoods and community spaces throughout the Boston area, speaking with members of the public about the nonprofit campaign you're representing.
Depending on the team and campaign, you may work through street fundraising or door-to-door outreach.
Your day may include:
Approaching and starting conversations with members of the public
Learning detailed information about your nonprofit campaign
Explaining important issues in a clear and engaging way
Listening and responding to questions
Building rapport quickly
Asking people directly to become monthly supporters
Working alongside a fundraising team
Practicing your approach and applying regular coaching
Working toward clear individual and team fundraising goals
Fair warning: this is definitely not a desk job.
You'll spend much of your shift walking, standing, working outdoors, and talking with people you've never met.
Some conversations will go incredibly well.
Some won't.
You'll hear "no" regularly.
Successful fundraisers learn not to take rejection personally. They reset, adjust their approach, apply feedback, and keep going.
This Is Goal-Oriented Fundraising
Your hourly wage is guaranteed. You are not working on commission.
Performance still matters.
You'll receive paid training, regular coaching, and support from experienced team leaders, but you'll also be expected to work toward clear fundraising goals, apply feedback, remain reliable, and continue developing your skills.
If you're looking for a job where simply showing up is enough, this probably won't be the right fit.
If you enjoy improving at something, working toward measurable goals, and seeing your results get better over time, you may really enjoy the challenge.
Work on Causes That Matter
Our campaigns can change based on the needs of our nonprofit partners, but the work may involve issues such as:
Humanitarian aid
Hunger and global poverty
Support for children and families
Human and civil rights
Social justice
Communities affected by conflict, displacement, and crisis
Education and opportunity
Other humanitarian and advocacy campaigns
You don't need previous nonprofit, political, or activism experience.
You do need to be genuinely comfortable learning about these issues, discussing them respectfully, and accurately representing the nonprofit you're fundraising for.
Full-Time Preferred - Part-Time Available
We're particularly interested in candidates looking for consistent full-time work, but part-time opportunities are now available too.
All new fundraisers begin with a 3-day paid training period that must be completed Monday through Wednesday.
During training:
You'll earn $20/hour guaranteed
You'll learn the campaign and fundraising approach
You'll receive hands-on coaching and feedback
You'll get a realistic introduction to the work
After successfully completing training:
Your guaranteed hourly wage increases to $20.50/hour
Part-time employees can choose 3 workdays between Monday and Friday
Part-time requires a minimum of 22.5 hours / 3 full shifts per week
Full-time employees can work 4-5 weekdays
Each shift is 7.5 hours long
There are currently no Saturday or Sunday part-time shifts
Applicants must be available for complete shifts rather than partial-day schedules.
Build More Than a Paycheck
This can be a job, a stepping stone into the nonprofit sector, or the beginning of a longer-term career.
You'll develop hands-on experience in:
Nonprofit fundraising
Advocacy
Donor engagement
Public speaking
Persuasive communication
Storytelling
Community outreach
Relationship-building
Handling objections
Goal setting
Coaching and feedback
Leadership
These are skills you can use whether you grow with Public Outreach or eventually move into nonprofit work, communications, advocacy, sales, community organizing, management, or another people-focused career.
We Promote From Within
Our leaders started as fundraisers.
They learned the work in the field, became strong performers, developed coaching and leadership skills, and moved into positions where they now train and support other fundraisers.
If you perform well and want more responsibility, there are opportunities to grow.
Your development doesn't stop after training. We believe in ongoing coaching, regular pay reviews, and giving strong performers opportunities to advance.
Pay & Benefits
$20/hour guaranteed during your paid Monday-Wednesday training period
$20.50/hour guaranteed after successfully completing training
Bonus opportunities on top of your hourly wage
Regular pay reviews
Opportunities for additional pay growth
Paid training from day one
Full-time and part-time opportunities
Health, dental, and vision benefits for eligible full-time employees and their families after 3 months
Paid time off
Employee Assistance Program
Opportunities to move into training and leadership roles
Your base wage is guaranteed and is not dependent on how many donors you sign up.
Based in Dorchester - Working Across Boston
Our fundraising team is based out of our Dorchester office, but your workday won't necessarily stay in Dorchester.
Our teams work in different neighborhoods and communities across the Boston area depending on the campaign and outreach location.
If you enjoy being out in the world, meeting different people, and having a workday that doesn't look exactly the same every day, you'll probably enjoy the environment.
Who We're Looking For
You may be a strong fit if you:
Are naturally social and comfortable starting conversations with strangers
Communicate clearly and confidently
Care about humanitarian, human rights, nonprofit, or social justice causes
Are motivated by goals and like seeing yourself improve
Can stay positive after hearing "no"
Are comfortable receiving regular feedback and coaching
Are reliable and take your commitments seriously
Like being active and working with other people
Want experience you can use in your future career
Experience in fundraising, canvassing, hospitality, restaurants, customer service, retail, sales, advocacy, community organizing, volunteering, performance, or public speaking can translate especially well.
But experience isn't required.
You don't need to check every box.
If you like people, care about making an impact, can handle a challenge, and are motivated to improve, we'd love to meet you.
Come As You Are
We want this to be a workplace where people can actually be themselves.
Our teams include members of the LGBTQ+ community, and creating an environment where people feel safe, respected, supported, and welcome is genuinely important to us.
We know people from underrepresented communities often have to think carefully about whether a workplace will genuinely respect who they are.
Queer, trans, and applicants from underrepresented communities are welcome here.
You don't need to fit a certain mold to build a career here.
Bring your perspective, your personality, and a willingness to learn.
Before You Apply
You must be 18+
You must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
You must be available for all 3 paid training days, Monday through Wednesday
After training, you must be able to consistently work at least 3 full 7.5-hour weekday shifts / 22.5 hours per week
You should be comfortable working outdoors, standing, and walking for much of your shift
You should be comfortable with both street and door-to-door fundraising
You should be comfortable starting conversations with members of the public throughout the day
You need to be able to communicate confidently in English
You should be comfortable receiving coaching and working toward measurable fundraising goals
What Happens Next?
We're actively interviewing and looking for candidates who can start soon.
Selected applicants will be invited to an in-person group interview with our Boston team.
You'll have a chance to meet us, learn about the nonprofit campaigns, ask questions, and get a realistic picture of what the work is like.
Candidates selected to continue may move quickly into onboarding and the next available Monday-Wednesday paid training group.
We want you to know what you're signing up for before you commit.
