About this role
Fundraiser - $20/hr Guaranteed - Great for Students & Creatives - North Hollywood / San Fernando
$20/hr guaranteed + bonuses | 21-35 hours/week | North Hollywood / San Fernando Valley | Paid training
Want meaningful work where your personality, communication skills and interest in social issues actually matter?
We're growing our North Hollywood / San Fernando Valley fundraising team and hiring outgoing, thoughtful people to represent leading international human rights and humanitarian organizations.
You'll work face-to-face with members of the public, explain important nonprofit campaigns, and inspire people to support that work by becoming monthly donors.
This role can be a great fit for students, recent graduates, performers, creatives, hospitality workers, organizers, advocates, and other strong communicators looking for stable hourly income while doing work that has a real-world impact.
No fundraising experience is required. We provide paid training and ongoing coaching.
Pay & Benefits
- $20/hour guaranteed starting pay
- Your hourly wage is guaranteed - this is not commission-only work
- Performance bonuses and incentives
- Paid training from day one
- Approximately 21-35 hours per week
- Full-time and part-time opportunities
- Health, dental, and vision benefits for eligible full-time employees after 3 months
- Opportunities to grow into trainer, team leader, and management roles
Public Outreach believes strongly in developing people from within. Many of our field leaders started as fundraisers and learned the work from the ground up.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Most of our current North Hollywood openings are on our street fundraising team.
You'll meet with your team in North Hollywood and travel together to rotating outreach locations throughout the San Fernando Valley and, when needed, other parts of greater Los Angeles.
A typical day involves:
- Starting conversations with people you have never met
- Learning the nonprofit campaign you are representing
- Explaining complex social and humanitarian issues in a clear, engaging way
- Listening, answering questions, and building genuine rapport
- Asking people directly to support the organization through a recurring monthly donation
- Working alongside a fundraising partner and supportive field team
- Practicing your approach and applying regular coaching
- Working toward clear fundraising goals
Some candidates may also be considered for door-to-door fundraising depending on campaign needs, availability, and team fit.
We will explain your team and fundraising format before placement. If another LA opportunity looks like a better match, we'll discuss it with you first.
The Causes You'll Talk About
Depending on your campaign, conversations may involve issues such as:
- Migrants' and refugees' rights
- LGBTQIA+ and trans rights
- Human rights and access to due process
- Racial and social justice
- Emergency food, water, shelter, and medical assistance
- Communities affected by conflict and displacement
- Natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies
- Long-term community development and poverty reduction
These are sometimes personal, complex, or politically charged conversations.
You do not need a political science degree or previous activism experience. You do need to be genuinely comfortable learning about these issues, discussing them respectfully, and representing the nonprofit's campaign accurately.
If you're interested in human rights, humanitarian aid, advocacy, nonprofit work, public policy, social impact, or community organizing, there is a lot here to learn.
This is Not a Desk Job
You will spend a full 7-hour shift outside, standing and walking, approaching members of the public, and starting conversations throughout the day.
Some people will be excited to speak with you.
Some will ignore you.
Some will say no.
Successful fundraisers learn not to take rejection personally. They reset, try again, listen to coaching, and keep their energy up.
And while your $20/hour starting wage is guaranteed, fundraising performance still matters.
This is a goals-based, performance-evaluated role. You'll receive training and support, but you'll also be expected to work toward clear fundraising goals, apply feedback, remain reliable, and show progress.
If you're looking for a job where simply showing up is enough, this probably won't be the right fit.
If you like improving at something, working toward a measurable goal, and seeing yourself get better week by week, you may really enjoy it.
Schedule
This role requires a minimum commitment of 3 complete 7-hour shifts per week - 21 hours.
Our North Hollywood street team currently operates Wednesday through Sunday.
- Wednesday-Friday shifts are generally around 12:00 PM-7:00 PM
- Weekend hours may vary depending on the outreach location or event
- During your initial training and evaluation period, you may be asked to work your selected shifts consecutively so you can build consistency and learn the campaign
- More scheduling flexibility may become available once you have completed the initial evaluation period
Please apply only if you can consistently work full shifts. This is not a role where shifts can be shortened around classes or another job.
Where You'll Work
Your home base is North Hollywood, but your workday will not necessarily stay in North Hollywood.
Our teams travel to rotating fundraising locations throughout the Valley. Depending on the day and campaign, locations can include areas such as:
- North Hollywood
- Granada Hills
- Santa Clarita
- Calabasas
- Agoura Hills
- Other locations throughout the Valley and greater Los Angeles
You do not need to own a car, but you must be able to reliably get to the North Hollywood meeting point and be comfortable traveling with the team to changing field locations.
If you're specifically looking for a job where you report to one location and remain there all day, this isn't that kind of role.
Who Tends to Thrive Here
You may be a strong fit if you:
- Enjoy talking with new people
- Communicate with warmth, confidence, and personality
- Care about nonprofit, humanitarian, or human rights issues
- Can explain complicated ideas in a way people understand
- Like active work more than sitting behind a desk
- Can handle hearing "no" without losing your motivation
- Are comfortable being coached and trying a different approach
- Like having measurable goals to work toward
- Are dependable and can commit to full shifts
- Can confidently lead detailed conversations in English
- Are at least 18 years old
- Are legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
Experience in independent restaurants or cafes, hospitality, retail, customer service, fundraising, theatre, improv, music, public speaking, advocacy, volunteering, organizing, or sales can translate especially well to this work.
But experience is not required.
We're much more interested in your communication skills, curiosity, resilience, reliability, and willingness to learn.
Great Experience for Students & Creatives
This can be especially valuable for students and recent graduates interested in areas such as:
Political science, international relations, sociology, communications, public policy, human rights, nonprofit work, social justice, marketing, or community organizing.
It's also a strong fit for actors, musicians, comedians, dancers, writers, and other creatives who are comfortable performing, improvising, reading a room, telling stories, and connecting with strangers.
You'll build practical experience in:
- Nonprofit fundraising
- Public speaking
- Persuasive communication
- Storytelling
- Community outreach
- Handling objections
- Goal setting
- Coaching and feedback
- Leadership
Those are skills you can take well beyond this job.
