Our Union City oral surgery practice is seeking an exceptional Oral Surgery Assistant to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside Dr. Hidemi Oka, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, in a specialty surgical practice committed to clinical excellence, patient safety, and compassionate care.

As an Oral Surgery Assistant, you will play an essential role throughout the surgical experience—preparing patients for procedures, assisting during surgery, supporting anesthesia monitoring and recovery, and helping patients feel safe and cared for throughout their visit.

This part-time position, scheduled for 20–24 hours per week, is ideal for a motivated clinical professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys being part of a collaborative team, and wants to continue developing advanced surgical and anesthesia skills.

In this role, you will gain hands-on experience supporting procedures including:

Dental implants
Wisdom teeth and surgical extractions
Bone grafting
Oral pathology procedures
IV sedation and anesthesia
Other advanced oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures

You'll work closely with an experienced, board-certified surgeon and clinical team while continuing to expand your surgical knowledge, anesthesia skills, and patient-care expertise.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Oral Surgery Assistant supports the surgeon and clinical team in delivering safe, efficient, and exceptional surgical care.

This individual assists throughout all phases of treatment—from preparing patients and surgical rooms to chairside surgical assisting, anesthesia support, recovery, patient education, and clinical documentation.

Success in this role requires strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, compassion, professionalism, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to patient safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Surgical & Clinical Support

Assist the surgeon during oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures.
Prepare surgical rooms, instruments, equipment, medications, and supplies.
Anticipate the needs of the surgeon throughout procedures.
Maintain sterile technique and follow established infection-control protocols.
Obtain and document patient vital signs and clinical information.
Support efficient patient flow and turnover throughout the surgical day.

Anesthesia & Patient Monitoring

Prepare patients for IV sedation and anesthesia procedures.
Assist with anesthesia-related procedures within applicable training, certification, and scope-of-practice requirements.
Monitor and document patient vital signs as directed during procedures and recovery.
Closely observe patients throughout the recovery process.
Follow established emergency, safety, and anesthesia protocols.

Patient Care & Education

Create a calm, compassionate environment for patients who may be anxious about surgery.
Review pre-operative and post-operative instructions.
Educate patients and caregivers regarding recovery expectations and home-care instructions.
Respond to patient questions with empathy and professionalism.
Help deliver an exceptional patient experience from arrival through discharge.

Clinical & Operational Excellence

Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
Sterilize instruments and maintain surgical equipment according to established protocols.
Maintain OSHA, HIPAA, infection-control, and patient-safety standards.
Assist with clinical inventory and ensure appropriate supplies are available.
Collaborate closely with the surgeon, clinical team members, and administrative staff.
Contribute to continuous process improvement and operational excellence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Dental assisting experience.
Current CPR/BLS certification.
Strong clinical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
Ability to remain calm, organized, and focused in a fast-paced surgical environment.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a high-performing clinical team.
Dependable attendance and strong professional judgment.
Ability to meet all applicable California requirements for assigned clinical duties.

Preferred

Previous oral surgery or surgical dental assisting experience.
Experience assisting with IV sedation and anesthesia procedures.
DAANCE (Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination) certification.
OMSA (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Assistant) certification.
Experience with dental implants, bone grafting, wisdom teeth removal, and surgical extractions.
Experience with oral surgery or dental practice management systems.
Bilingual Spanish a plus.
