About this role
About Matter Intelligence
Welcome to Matter, where we are building the future of vision AI: pairing a world-first sensor that sees molecular chemistry, temperature, and 3D shape with a Large World Model that will be the most powerful intelligence engine for the physical world. This system doesn't just see what something looks like; it understands everything from a single pixel. We call this Superintelligent Vision.
Our team has delivered technologies to Mars for NASA/JPL, designed advanced sensors for U.S. Defense, and built core infrastructure at OpenAI. We are now building the next generation of space- and airborne-based sensing systems.
About the Role
Matter is hiring a Mechanical Drafter to turn conceptual mechanical designs into precise, release-ready drawings for airborne optomechanical and optoelectrical payload hardware. This role partners closely with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and suppliers to ensure hardware is accurately documented, manufacturable, and cost-effective.
Key Responsibilities
Detail conceptual designs and generate precise 3D CAD models, assembly drawings, part drawings, and bills of material for optical and optoelectrical assemblies, including lens housings, fixtures, mounts, and alignment mechanisms.
Perform tolerance analyses and select materials to ensure precision mechanical designs meet optical, performance, manufacturability, and reliability requirements.
Work with optical engineers to translate system-level optical requirements into robust mechanical designs; collaborate with manufacturing, supply chain, and suppliers to optimize drawing packages and designs for manufacturability and cost.
Support prototype builds, fit checks, integration, and hardware troubleshooting by resolving drawing, tolerance, and configuration issues.
Maintain configuration discipline, drawing release quality, and revision control; incorporate lessons from fabrication, assembly, and test into drawing updates.
Qualifications
Required
Demonstrated proficiency producing detailed mechanical drawings and documentation for precision assemblies.
Strong proficiency with NX or an equivalent CAD tool; deep understanding of precision mechanical design, ASME Y14.5-2018 GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, materials, and manufacturing processes.
Experience creating drawings for optical-system components such as lenses, lasers, sensors, and imaging assemblies; ability to collaborate effectively with optical engineers and manufacturing partners.
Ability to communicate drawing requirements, tolerances, and technical updates clearly to engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and suppliers.
Preferred
Experience supporting optical, optoelectrical, aerospace, or precision-instrument assemblies.
Experience preparing drawing packages that support optical alignment, precision assembly, and inspection.
Familiarity with prototype and low-volume manufacturing environments, including supplier and manufacturing feedback loops.
What Success Looks Like
Drawing packages are complete, accurate, manufacturable, and released on time with clear configuration control.
Optical and optoelectrical assemblies build and integrate as intended with minimal avoidable rework.
Drawing updates incorporate evidence from fabrication, assembly, and test quickly and accurately.
Location
This role is based in El Segundo, CA, and requires onsite work.
