JOB SUMMARY

 

The Production Internship is a developmental 10-week program role designed to provide direct support to Martin Marietta's Asphalt and Paving operations while gaining practical experience in asphalt production, paving construction, project estimation, quality control, safety, and operational management. This internship is designed to provide students and emerging professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the heavy civil construction and asphalt paving industry through structured learning, field exposure, and project-based assignments.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist estimating personnel with the preparation of cost estimates for asphalt paving, grading, and roadway construction projects.
  • Review project plans, bid packages, specifications, and construction drawings to gain an understanding of project requirements.
  • Assist in gathering pricing information for materials, equipment, labor, trucking, and subcontracted services.
  • Support the maintenance of estimating databases and historical cost records.
  • Participate in bid preparation activities and estimate review meetings.
  • Learn methods used to evaluate project risks, production challenges, and profitability considerations.
  • Observe and support the bid submission process while gaining exposure to competitive bidding practices.
  • Gain exposure to daily asphalt plant operations, including production planning, inventory management, and material handling.
  • Assist operations personnel in monitoring production activities to ensure efficiency and product quality.
  • Learn about asphalt mix designs, raw materials, aggregate processing, and production controls.
  • Observe maintenance activities and equipment inspections to better understand operational reliability.
  • Participate in efforts to identify opportunities for process improvements and increased operational efficiency.
  • Assist in tracking production metrics and operational performance indicators.
  • Observe and support paving crews during project execution.
  • Assist field personnel with project documentation, production reporting, and daily activity tracking.
  • Gain experience with equipment utilization, crew coordination, and jobsite logistics.
  • Observe project scheduling and resource allocation processes.
  • Participate in jobsite visits to understand production methods and field operations.
  • Participate in structured internship learning activities and training opportunities.
  • Build relationships with operations leaders, estimators, engineers, project managers, and field personnel.
  • Attend meetings, site visits, and operational reviews to broaden industry knowledge.
  • Complete assigned projects and present findings to management when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate initiative, curiosity, and a willingness to learn new skills and processes.
  • Gain exposure to potential career paths within Martin Marietta's Operations, Estimating, Construction, Quality Control, and Production functions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

 

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Construction Management.

Valid Driver’s License

 

Work Experience

 

No work experience is required; 6 months – 1 year of prior internship or a combination of internship and work experience, is preferred.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

 

Physical Requirements

 

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for plant maintenance and equipment servicing.

Required to bend, stoop, climb, and reach. You must be able to maintain three points of contact when climbing on/off machinery or on ladders.

Strong hand-eye-foot coordination is essential for operating hand/foot controls. You must have good depth perception with or without seeing aid for distances up to 150 feet.

 

Working Conditions

 

All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry, and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.

The hiring range for this position is $25 -$30 exclusive of benefits or bonuses (discretionary and non-discretionary). The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience. Additionally, at Martin Marietta we place a high value on internal pay equity and will consider the compensation for those in similarly situated roles and direct team members. The hiring range for this role represents the base compensation we expect to pay for the position at time of hire and does not represent the total possible base pay of the position.

Part time employees are eligible to participate in the 401k plan and receive a company match. In addition, they are eligible to start accruing service for the pension plan.
