POSITION SUMMARY: The Engineer I performs technical work to develop and design new products and refine existing product lines, including creating drawings and bills of material for the production of tanks and tank trailers. This role works both independently and as part of a team, reporting to the local Engineering Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist senior engineers and operations with shop floor process and product improvements
- Assist senior engineers with process improvements within the department
- Understand ASME and DOT code and apply it to tanks and tank trailers
- Provide periodic relief to the design function by processing jobs for production during peak demand periods
- Provide periodic relief to the Assistant Chief Engineer by processing ASPs and weight scalings during peak demand periods
- Use CAD systems to create models and drawings for parts and trailer subsystems
- Create and manage items and BOMs in the ERP system for parts and trailer subsystems
- Read and interpret AutoCAD drawings
- Operate Inventor and Vault to create accurate drawings
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong team player
- Proactive and able to work independently to meet goals
- Able to manage multiple projects at the same time
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution
- Solid mechanical engineering fundamentals along with working knowledge of ASME and DOT regulations and familiarity with accepted practices in the tank trailer industry
- Knowledge of Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, Mathcad, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Project, plus familiarity with FEA theory and one or more commercial FEA codes
- Some experience in a manufacturing environment

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Requires periodic exposure to manufacturing areas where personal protective equipment — such as safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection — is mandatory
- Primarily an office environment with typical ambient temperature, lighting, and office equipment
- Occasional exposure to manufacturing areas requiring eye, hearing, and foot protection
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Sit or stand as needed
- Walk primarily on level surfaces for periods throughout the day
- Reach above shoulder height or below the waist, and lift as required, to access documents or store materials
- Use proper lifting techniques
- Type and sit at a computer for extended periods
