By joining our Project Delivery and Preservation Branch I as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Clay County, you’ll have the opportunity to perform a variety of general labor functions and operate basic automotive and power equipment such as, but not limited to bushhogs, chainsaws, chemical sprayers, chippers, jack hammers, mowing tractors, single axle truck (dump, flatbed, pickup), snowplow and salt spreader, broom sweepers and weed trimmers.

By joining our Project Delivery and Preservation Branch I as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Clay County, you’ll have the opportunity to perform a variety of general labor functions and operate basic automotive and power equipment such as, but not limited to bushhogs, chainsaws, chemical sprayers, chippers, jack hammers, mowing tractors, single axle truck (dump, flatbed, pickup), snowplow and salt spreader, broom sweepers and weed trimmers.
Holders of the Highway Technician Assistant I position will complete tasks such as:
- Operate dump trucks with snowplow and salt spreader during Snow and Ice Season
- Operate a tractor type mowing machine, assist in brush cutting, and use chemical sprayer
- Flag for operations requiring traffic control
- Learn and assist with basic surveying activities on construction projects, maintenance and repair or roadways
- Attend required training classes
- Experience working on rough terrain and in changing climates
- Basic maintenance or construction experience
- Eligibility to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License
- Basic equipment operating experience

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):
Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Within 12 months of employment in this job classification, employees in this classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority with documentation that he or she holds a valid Class B commercial driver's license. Within one year of employment in this job classification, the employee must complete First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and must possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
