About this role
About the Work Unit:
The Folkmann Lab in the Department of Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University studies the function, structure, and regulation of biomolecular condensates. These macroscopic structures spatially organize biological functions and biochemical reactions within the cell. The lab is particularly interested in understanding how biomolecular condensates contribute to proper animal embryogenesis and development. To investigate these mechanisms, the lab uses multidisciplinary approaches including biochemistry, biophysics, genome editing, cell biology, single-molecule imaging, and super-resolution imaging. The research team includes faculty, undergraduate students, and graduate students.
Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Assist in Research and Development
Preparation of buffers and reagents
Writing and updating laboratory protocols
Production of DNA vectors for protein expression
Overexpression and purification of proteins from bacterial and insect cells for biophysical characterization
Use biophysical methods to characterize interactions of proteins
Use microscopy approaches to characterize cellular phenomena and biochemical reactions
Collecting and assembling research data for presentation and/or reports
Participating in weekly meetings to discuss project progress
Lab space maintenance
Assists with orders and maintenance of inventory and supplies
Other tasks as directed by the supervisor
Supervisory Relationships:
No supervisory responsibilities
The position reports administratively and functionally to the PI.
Education and Certifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
Experience and Skills:
- Ability to follow established lab protocols and maintain accurate research records is required.
- Ability to perform all basic calculations related to buffer composition (Molarity, dilution factor, etc.) is required.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail is required.
- Previous lab research experience is preferred.
