We are seeking Garifuna Over-the-Phone Interpreters (OPI) to support our USCIS contract. Garifuna, an indigenous Arawakan language with African and Carib influences, is spoken in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, and is a rare but critical language frequently required in asylum and immigration interviews.
Responsibilities
- Provide real-time Garifuna ↔ English telephonic interpretation for USCIS officers, applicants, and stakeholders.
- Interpret accurately, impartially, and with cultural sensitivity in immigration and asylum contexts.
- Maintain confidentiality under USCIS/DHS interpreter standards.
- Support both scheduled assignments and urgent/surge interpretation needs.
- Participate in training, compliance refreshers, and quality assurance audits.
Qualifications
- Native or near-native fluency in Garifuna and English.
- 2+ years of professional interpreting experience (immigration, asylum, community, NGO, or government preferred).
- Strong cultural knowledge of Garifuna communities in Central America and the diaspora.
- Familiarity with interpreter ethics, confidentiality, and neutrality standards.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident eligible for Tier 3/Tier 5 security clearance.
