About the Opportunity
FirstEnergy is seeking a qualified Distribution Instructor III or IV to design, develop, deliver, and evaluate technical training for Distribution Design employees and related operational groups. This position requires strong distribution design experience, working knowledge of Distribution Design Studio (DDS), SPANS, CREWS, GIS View, and FirstEnergy Distribution Standards, and the ability to promote safe, compliant, and consistent work practices across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, deliver, and evaluate classroom, virtual, and hands-on training for Distribution Design employees and other operational personnel.
- Provide instruction on DDS, SPANS, CREWS, GIS View, FirstEnergy Distribution Standards (single-phase, three-phase, overhead, and underground), and associated business processes.
- Develop and maintain lesson plans, job aids, practical exercises, assessments, and evaluation tools aligned with current design processes.
- Conduct training needs analyses and job task analyses to identify capability gaps and recommend training solutions.
- Evaluate learner performance through written assessments, practical demonstrations, system-based exercises, and job-related scenarios.
- Collaborate with Distribution Design, Engineering, Operations, Safety, IT, and subject matter experts to maintain accurate and consistent curriculum.
- Support implementation of new tools, procedures, standards, and process changes affecting Distribution Design work.
- Maintain accurate training records, completion data, and learner feedback in appropriate learning and business systems.
- Promote a safety-focused culture and model behaviors that support operational excellence, customer service, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Distribution Instructor III Qualifications
- Distribution Designer experience, or equivalent experience performing distribution design work in an electric utility environment.
- Working knowledge of DDS, SPANS, CREWS, GIS View, and FirstEnergy Distribution Standards.
- Ability to interpret and explain distribution design procedures, technical documentation, design standards, and business system workflows.
- Demonstrated ability to train, coach, mentor, or provide feedback to employees at varying levels of experience; prior formal training or instructional experience is preferred but not required.
- Strong communication, presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to develop technical training materials and translate complex design processes into clear learning content.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools and ability to use learning technologies, reporting tools, and business systems.
- Commitment to safety, compliance, customer service, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Associate degree or equivalent experience and 4–6 years of relevant instructional, technical, operational, distribution design, or workforce development experience.
Distribution Instructor IV Qualifications
- Meets all Distribution Instructor III qualifications.
- Associate degree required; advanced degree preferred, or equivalent experience, and 7–10 years of relevant instructional, technical, operational, distribution design, or workforce development experience.
- Advanced proficiency in DDS workflows, field design processes, work request lifecycle, materials selection, design package preparation, and standards-based design review.
- Experience supporting distribution design system implementations, process changes, or curriculum updates.
- Experience facilitating training for adult learners in classroom, virtual, or field-based environments.
- Understanding of how distribution design work supports safety, reliability, constructability, customer commitments, and operational performance.
- Ability to collaborate across departments and support standardization of training practices and design expectations.
Additional Requirements
- Must be available to support storm response activities, including assigned storm roles during restoration events, as business needs require.
- Travel to various FirstEnergy locations may be required for training delivery, field observations, meetings, and other business needs.
