The Responsible AI team within the Chief AI Office is looking for a hands-on technical leader to help the world's best decision science team build, evaluate and scale Gen AI and agentic AI solutions that solve complex customer, product and channel problems.
You’ll join a highly technical, technology‑leaning data science community with strong grounding in machine learning solutions, modern AI stacks, strong collaboration with engineering peers software engineering, ML systems and modern AI stacks. This team plays a critical role in how AI is responsibly implemented at CommBank not just built, but trusted, scaled and sustained.

As a Senior Manager – Responsible AI, Gen AI, you’ll lead a specialist team of experienced Data Scientists who sit at the intersection of Resp AI, Gen AI, ML engineering, and enterprise platforms. This team is distinct in its priorities of supporting the Group through Technology to build scalable, safe, and production-ready machine learning and Responsible AI solutions, focusing on best practices, and creating enabling products to be used by AI practitioners across the organisation. This team is distinct in its focus, in building and enabling scalable, production‑ready Responsible AI frameworks to deploy ML, Gen AI and Agentic systems that operate safely and reliably in a regulated environment.
This is a hands‑on technical leadership role with real scale and influence: shaping products, influencing architectural and design decisions, and upholding best practices in ways of working, all while supporting the growth of our people. Shaping standards, architectural decisions, and ways of working, while growing people and capability.
We are seeking people who can:
- Demonstrated experience in leading and managing high-performing Data Science teams along with strong technical background as a Data Scientist.
- Lead with thought leadership in Generative AI model development, covering building, evaluating, and fine-tuning foundational models.
- Define and implement frameworks, governance, and tooling for Agentic and AI model evaluation, validation, and monitoring.
- Collaborate with AI Engineering, MLOps, Data Platform, AI research teams, model risk policy and governance teams, and AI hub stakeholders to develop and refine Responsible AI roadmaps.
- Work with data scientists and AI engineers to automate appropriate controls to enable rapid development and deployment of safe AI at scale.
- Represent the company’s AI research in publications, conferences, and internal events to showcase responsible AI capabilities.
Tech skills:
We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know all of them.
- Expertise and deep understanding of generative AI models, machine learning, and ethical AI principles.
- Proven experience in being a hands-on technical leader, with focus on Data Science, Problem solving, AI model development along with solid coding skills in Python.
- Strong experience in designing and implementing AI evaluation, validation, and monitoring frameworks to define relevant open-source applications and convert them into practical capabilities that will benefit our AI developer’s community.
- Innate ability to communicate, collaborate and engage with cross-functional teams influencing AI strategies and best practices.
- Demonstrated track record of publishing AI research and presenting findings at industry events and being adept at identifying practical applications that support Group’s AI Ambitions.
- Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Data Science, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field is encouraged.
