About this role

SUMMARY: Performs skilled (Class 3 License) work in the operation of the Wastewater Treatment Facility. Works on assigned shift and does other work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following:

  •  Performs skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Facility as scheduled by the Assistant Superintendent.
  • Operates chemical feed systems and assists in the unloading of chemical deliveries.
  • Collects operational data for the Activated Sludge Process, primary process, and solids handling.
  • May be called upon to work additional shifts other than the scheduled shift
  • Assists in the training of the PCS Apprentices and assists the PCS II’s in special projects
  • Keeps work area neat and clean and assists laborers in keeping the facility in an exceptional manner
  • Assists maintenance crews in isolating equipment for maintenance.
  • Monitors treatment facility, collection system and CSO facilities using SCADA system. Must be able to operate the plant in both manual and automatic modes
  • Completes tasks in accordance with CWW Safety Procedures.
  • Inspects for proper operation; pumps, motors, valves, piping systems, backflow preventers, HVAC systems, air compressors, sludge thickening equipment, chemical feed equipment, odor control systems, sludge handling and moving equipment, and utility and process water systems.
  • Safely uses hand tools and power tools to perform maintenance on plant equipment, including but not limited to drill press, grinders, all hand tools, welders, and cutting torches.
  • Learns to operate all plant equipment in all aspects of the treatment process. 
  • Participates in staff meetings and assists management in compiling data and information.
  • From time to time may be called upon by a supervisor to perform other duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

High School graduate or CED is the minimum requirement. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, mechanics, and/or mathematics preferred. Specialized training in relation to wastewater treatment is preferred. One-year experience working in a wastewater treatment facility as an operator or mechanic which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must meet the certification and training requirements of the Wastewater Facility Career Ladder (Version Sept 2013). Possession of a valid and clean Georgia driver’s license.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures. Ability to write routine reports, correspondence and record keeping. Ability to read blue prints.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to draw and read graphs. 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply commonsense to carryout instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb stairs, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or equipment; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear, and smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb and balance. 

The employee must occasionally lift and be able to move objects of 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to moderate noise and vibration. The employee frequently works outside in all weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes, gases, and air borne particles. The employee regularly works with and around chemicals, blood borne pathogens, confined spaces, associated tanks, piping, and chemical feed systems commonly found in the wastewater industry

Employee must obtain certification and meet performance expectations within specified conditions and timeline requirements


  • Potential applicant must pass pre-employment aptitude test before hiring
  • Employee hired as Process Control Specialist Apprentice Grade 6
  • Completes Sacramento Manual Correspondence Course Volume One within first 12 months
  • Attends GWWI basic treatment class within first 12 months
  • Takes 1st.certification exam
  • If passed, moves up to Process Control Specialist I-A Grade 9 at 12 month performance appraisal if "Meets Expectations" score is obtained
  • If "Meets Expectation" score is not obtained on performance appraisal, employee is placed on 90 day probation period.
  • Employee given additional performance appraisals at 30, 60 and 90 day time periods
  • If "Meets Expectations" score is not obtained at the end of 90 days, employee will be terminated regardless of certification status
  • If employee fails certification exam 1st. try, he/she will be allowed to take exam 2nd. time if performance appraisal score "Meets Expectations.
  • Employee placed on probation until test is passed (within three tries)
  • Retake examination within 3 months - Cost to be incurred by employee
  • If passed, moves up to Process Control Specialist I-A Grade 9 at 12 month performance appraisal if "Meets Expectations" score is obtained
  • If employee fails certification exam 2nd. try, he/she will must schedule to take exam 3rd. time within next 3 months. Cost to be incurred by employee
  • If passed, moves up to Process Control Specialist I-A Grade 7 at 12 month performance appraisal if "Meets Expectations" score is obtained
  • If employee fails certification exam 3rd. try, he/she will be terminated
