About The Center for Black Educator Development

The Center for Black Educator Development exists to (re)build a national Black Teacher Pipeline to achieve educational and racial justice by ensuring there is equity in the recruiting, training, hiring, and retention of quality educators who reflect the cultural backgrounds and share common socio-political interests of the students they serve.

Launched in June 2019, the Center for Black Educator Development (CBED) is revolutionizing education by dramatically increasing the number of Black educators so that low-income Black students and other historically disenfranchised students can reap the full benefits of a quality public education.

About Teaching Academy

Teaching Academy is the first phase of CBED’s multi-year developmental pipeline for future educators. The program is designed to attract, cultivate, and support high school students in becoming future educators who are dedicated to intellectual development, committed to social change, civically aware, and conscious of their role as servant leaders.

Through curriculum, professional development, coaching, and partnership support, Teaching Academy helps schools and districts build robust educator pathways within their Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Students engage in intellectually rigorous learning, personal and professional development, and early experiences in education that prepare them to successfully transition into post-secondary teacher preparation, CBED’s Future Teachers of Excellence Fellowship, Freedom Schools Literacy Academy, and ultimately careers in education.

As part of CBED’s broader vision to build a strong Black teacher pipeline from high school to the classroom, Teaching Academy seeks to expand high-quality CTE programming to 40 Black student-serving public schools by 2030.

About the Position

Reporting to the Managing Director of Program Design and Delivery, the Program Manager of Teaching Academy is responsible for the day-to-day execution and implementation of Teaching Academy across a portfolio of school and district partners.

The Program Manager ensures that established Teaching Academy programming is implemented consistently and with fidelity to CBED’s program model, mission, and Black liberatory approach to educator development. The Program Manager works closely with Teaching Academy facilitators and school partners to support curriculum implementation, provide coaching and technical assistance, monitor apprentice engagement and program progress, and ensure key program milestones and deliverables are completed.

The Program Manager also serves as an important connector between on-the-ground implementation and organizational leadership by identifying trends, challenges, and opportunities across sites and communicating those insights to inform ongoing program improvement.

  • Ensure program experiences support apprentices in developing educator identity, Black liberatory mindsets, servant leadership, civic awareness, and readiness for post-secondary education and careers.
  • Engage and support Teaching Academy apprentices in transitioning into additional CBED programs (as available), including Freedom Schools Literacy Academy (FSLA) and the Future Teachers of Excellence Fellowship (FTEF), to sustain their development and progression through CBED’s Teaching Pathways toward careers in education.

School, District & Partner Support

  • Serve as a primary day-to-day point of contact for assigned Teaching Academy school and district partners.
  • Build and maintain positive, responsive relationships with school-based and district-based partners responsible for Teaching Academy implementation.
