Anesthesia Tech II - Evening Shift

The Anesthesia Tech II is an integral member of the anesthesia patient care team and will operate under the general direction of the Anesthesiology Team Lead. The role is to assist the licensed anesthesia provider in the acquisition, preparation and application of equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia. Is committed to customer service and an ability to meet the needs and expectations of healthcare colleagues and patients, adapts well and flexible to changing situations, and demonstrates effective communication and teamwork skills. Provides support in anesthesia for routine and complex surgical cases by preparing and maintaining patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems before, during and after anesthesia. Responsibilities include but not limited to assisting the licensed anesthesia provider in various settings, performing duties under the direct supervision of the licensed anesthesia provider, providing support for routine surgical cases through preparation and maintenance of patient equipment and anesthesia delivery systems before, during and after anesthesia, and cleaning, sterilizing, disinfecting, stocking, ordering and maintaining the routine anesthesia equipment and supplies. Demonstrates the knowledge cardiopulmonary/vascular anatomy, physiology, infection control, pharmacology, and medical electronics. Identifies safety concerns in the age related population, identify normal growth and developmental milestones in neonates, infants, child, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients, and able to institute protective measures to provide a safe environment.

Responsibilities

• Provides assistance for invasive and non-invasive techniques (excluding the catheter insertion) which includes the following: direct systemic arterial, right arterial, central venous and pulmonary artery pressure measurements, patient monitoring and set up for anesthetic and respiratory gas, blood draw and placing EKG electrodes, blood pressure cuff and pulse oximetry on the patient. Transcribe physiological data from patient monitor for interpretation by physician.
• Assists the Anesthesiologist in difficult airway intubation by providing video laryngoscopy equipment and/or fiber optic intubation scope as requested. Knowledgeable in the techniques used in securing an open airway, e.g., jaw thrust, jaw lift or tongue hold.
• Executes the Malignant Hyperthermia protocol as it pertains to the preparation of the anesthesia machine.
• Awareness of appropriate procedure to properly respond to codes and initiate the proper procedures to assist the anesthesiologist and OR staff.
• Maintains, stocks, cleans and organizes anesthesia carts. This includes but not limited to removal of unnecessary items not included in the anesthesia cart and machine supply.
• Maintains medications within their expiration date and properly dispose of unused portions or remnants in appropriate containers. Perform mechanical function of infusing local anesthetic as directed and in presence of an anesthesia care provider. ASATT Certified Only.
• Appropriately sets up the room with all equipment and supplies needed for the implementing plan of care for each patient procedure. Controls and maintains all perioperative anesthesia equipment and devices including but not limited to low and high level disinfection and able to demonstrate competency on the pre-cleaning and disinfection protocol for these devices as per manufacturer instructions for use (IFU).Handles equipment and instruments correctly to provide appropriate availability and safety.
• Trouble shoots and replaces anesthesia equipment as needed prior to all procedures and when applicable escalate repair to clinical engineering. Performs necessary procedures to ensure all instruments and equipment meet all required regulations(FDA) for the safe and accurate operation of these devices. Demonstrates clinical knowledge of anesthesia equipment and current technologies. Ability to act as a resource to operating room staff in the area of anesthesia equipment and procedures.
• Interacts with all patient populations served utilizing communication skills appropriate for specific age group. Utilizes appropriate patient safety guidelines and patient identifies when transporting the patient between units. Utilizes appropriate person protective equipment (PPE) at all times and monitors other staff for compliance. Ensures compliance with all health and patient safety guidelines to include: fall prevention, proper specimen handling and acquired infection control.
• Identifies normal growth and developmental milestones in the neonates, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient population; maintains all required age specific competencies annually.
• Attends all in-service demonstration to assure proper training.
• Provides assistance in-service and workshops in the OR’s and Ancillary areas related to anesthesia equipment and supplies as needed.

Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma/GED - minimum
• Assoc. Degree/College Diploma Health Science or other related field - preferred

Experience

• 2 years Experience in a healthcare environment - minimum

Licenses and Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) - Upon Hire minimum Require BCLS unless a higher level of certification is required
• Certified Anesthesia Technician - Upon Hire preferred American Society of Anesthesia Technician and Technologist (ASATT)
