About this role

This position will be a part of the Credit & Fraud Risk - Customer Management team for International Card Services Japan – a large, fast growing, and highly visible portfolio that offers consumer and commercial payment and lending solutions. The incumbent will be responsible for the following:

Responsibilities

  • Perform end-to-end credit risk management of our existing customers for the consumer and commercial businesses, including the key areas of Authorizations point of sale strategy, Case Setup strategy for dunning and collections, and Responsible Lending Actions (RLA) strategies for automated exposure management
  • Manage risk outcomes and credit metrics
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the expected and unexpected credit losses in the business and communicate them effectively to business leaders
  • Focus on continuous improvement of credit risk management capabilities. Optimize integration and usage of capabilities and data such as consumer and commercial credit bureaus, bank data, and financial documents. Continually explore and test new data sources.
  • Ensure Risk Management capabilities are aligned with business strategy and strategic growth initiatives, including launches of new business practices, products, and services
  • Monitor economic performance across all risk decisions and partner with the Centers of Excellence to identify improvement opportunities
  • Develop / deploy capabilities and strategies that enhance profitable growth in partnership with central risk teams as well as local product, sales, marketing, and operations teams
  • Ensure complete understanding of and adherence to local laws & regulations
  • Have deep understanding of the evolving regulatory and competitive environment with direct and indirect impact on our business and risk management
  • Have deep understanding of macro-economic and business environment with direct and indirect impact on business and risk management

Qualifications

  • Strong relationship building, communication, and presentation skills
  • Proven experience and ability to build relationships with external and internal partners: marketing, product, sales, compliance, technology, legal, operations, and risk management colleagues across multiple geographies in order to lead through influence
  • Ability to influence the outcomes, funding, focus, and strategy for a business

 

Process/System Knowledge:

  • Have the ability to deeply understand relevant AXP production systems and the analytical environment to conduct account and portfolio analysis, observe trends to identify areas of weakness, and direct credit action strategy
  • Have the ability to develop a breadth and depth of content knowledge about AXP products, risk processes, and capabilities
  • Understand fully the economics of the credit card business, net loss provision, and the levers that can be used to affect economic outcomes

 

Leadership/Organizational Awareness & Effectiveness:

  • Proven ability to think and act at an enterprise level 
  • Proven ability to navigate and collaborate across different teams and organizations to get things done with a high sense of urgency
  • Proven ability to assess and link together internal/external factors to develop appropriate business and risk management strategies and actions
  • Proven ability to make quick but informed decisions without compromising quality

 

Technical Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years in an analytical role driving decisioning with data
  • Proficient in SQL and experience with working with databases and Excel
  • Programming experience in Python is preferred
  • Experience in using credit bureau, balance sheet, financial statement, bank statement, and AP/AR files in credit assessment
  • Experience/familiarity with Machine Learning models if preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Math, Statistics, Engineering, Economics, or similar quantitative field of study preferred
  • Advanced degree in Business, Finance, Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, or equivalent experience in similar business is preferred 
  • English fluency required
  • Conversational Japanese language proficiency required, fluency preferred
