About this role

Overview of role

Advanced Navigation is a global leader in high-accuracy navigation systems and robotics. Our products are engineered and manufactured in Australia to deliver mission-critical positioning data across sea, land, and air platforms—including subsea assets, autonomous ground vehicles, and aerospace applications.

The Technical Engagement Specialist plays a vital, dual-purpose role within our Global Services division. This role bridges the gap between our cutting-edge R&D engineering teams and our global customer base. You will be responsible for designing and delivering world-class technical training programs, while simultaneously authoring clear, concise technical documentation, user manuals, and product guides.

What you will do

As a Technical Engagement Specialist, you are expected to:

  • Master the technical complexities of Advanced Navigation’s hardware and software ecosystems.
  • Design, develop, and deliver engaging training curriculum for international clients, distributors, and internal teams.
  • Own and elevate the quality, clarity, and accuracy of product documentation.
  • Act as a key interface between R&D, Product Management, Customer Support, and Sales.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • 1. Training Architecture & Delivery (60%)
  • Curriculum Development: Design, build, and maintain comprehensive technical training frameworks, including syllabi, slide decks, hands-on lab exercises, assessments, and e-learning modules.
  • Global Delivery: Deliver high-impact, engaging technical training sessions via multiple channels: face-to-face workshops, live webinars, and self-paced digital learning management systems (LMS).
  • Customer Onboarding: Create targeted onboarding training for enterprise clients to accelerate product adoption and maximize customer lifetime value.
  • Internal Enablement: Conduct product training sessions for internal teams (Sales, Customer Success, Engineering) to ensure organization-wide alignment on product capabilities and new feature releases.
  • Field Training: Lead practical, hands-on technical training sessions, which may occasionally involve field testing or deploying navigation hardware in real-world environments (e.g., maritime or vehicle integrations).
  • 2. Technical Writing & Documentation (40%)
  • Documentation Authoring: Write, edit, and maintain high-quality technical documentation, including User Manuals, Quick Start Guides, API reference materials, and Hardware Integration Guides.
  • Simplifying Complexity: Translate complex engineering schematics, algorithms, and technical jargon into clear, structured, and easily digestible text and visual guides.
  • Release & Update Cycles: Partner closely with R&D and Product Management to proactively update documentation alongside software firmware updates and new hardware product lifecycles.
  • Knowledge Base Management: Organize and optimize our online customer Help Center/Knowledge Base, ensuring articles are searchable, up-to-date, and intuitive.
  • 3. Continuous Improvement & Stakeholder Feedback
  • Feedback Loops: Actively collect post-training evaluations and analyze customer support tickets to identify gaps in user knowledge and documentation.
  • Process Optimization: Continuously improve instructional design methodologies, formatting standards, and delivery tools.

Behavioural attributes for success

  • The Communicator-Educator: Possesses an innate ability to capture an audience's attention, read a room, and tailor complex technical explanations to match the exact expertise level of the listener.
  • Autonomy & Project Management: Highly self-directed; capable of managing multiple concurrent training and writing deadlines across different product lines without needing micro-management.
  • Curiosity & Rapid Learning: Fascinated by robotics, navigation, and hardware technology. Eager to dive deep into technical specs and ask engineers the right questions.
  • Attention to Detail: Uncompromising standards regarding spelling, grammar, document structure, and formatting layout.
  • Resilience & Adaptability: Thrives in a fast-paced, rapidly scaling environment where product specifications, features, and company priorities can quickly evolve.

Key Measurables

  • Training Excellence: Achieve consistently high Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) scores and Net Promoter Scores (NPS) on completed training programs.
  • Documentation Quality: Maintain zero critical inaccuracies in published manuals and decrease "documentation-related" customer support tickets over time.
  • Time-to-Publish: Successfully deliver updated user documentation and training materials in alignment with major product and firmware release schedules.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience: 6+ years of experience working as a Technical Trainer, Product Trainer, or Instructional Designer, with a heavy emphasis on writing your own documentation.
  • Industry Background: Proven experience working within a deeply technical B2B industry (e.g., Robotics, Aerospace, Defense, Telecoms, Advanced Manufacturing, or Complex Software/SaaS).
  • Instructional Design: Demonstrated experience creating end-to-end training pathways, utilizing modern LMS platforms, and developing multimedia training materials.
  • Technical Literacy: Exceptional ability to read, interpret, and explain technical engineering concepts (e.g., basic networking protocols, hardware interfaces, APIs, serial communication).
  • Tools: Mastery of modern technical writing documentation tools (e.g., MadCap Flare, Confluence, GitBook, Markdown, Adobe Creative Suite) and e-learning creation software.

Preferred Criteria

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Education, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills: Basic familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or C++) to accurately document APIs and configuration interfaces.
  • Acoustics/Navigation Knowledge: Any prior exposure to Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), GPS/GNSS technology, robotics, or subsea acoustics is highly advantageous.
  • Travel Availability: Open to occasional domestic and international travel to deliver on-site training workshops for enterprise clients.
